Two musicals

Once again I was thoroughly entertained by a production at The Harwich Junior Theatre in W. Harwich. I’ve attended two musicals of very different styles and thought both were not only great choices for the venue but for the casts. The first time I saw They’re Playing Our Song, based on a relationship in the life of Marvin Hamlisch who of course was the composer of all the music and songs. The cast was small but strong. The two leads had excellent vocal abilities for this genre and style as well as strong stage presence and experience.
The second show was Once On This Island, book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, music by Stephen Flaherty story based on The Little Mermaid, with Calypso rhythms and styles of music and dance. This cast seemed to enjoy every minute of their performance that consisted of non-stop singing and dancing. The show was more like and opera in that the story was told in a recitative rather than spoken narrative. The choreography helped to further the story by leading us from place to place within the story.
In both shows the costumes and set design were done simply but effectively. The small stage spaces were used creatively by the designer and were easily changed to create different settings. The musical director was amazing and was practically a one man band throughout the entire performance.
This theatre has a great reputation and it is clear why. I recommend taking a chance on one of their shows next time you are here on the Cape for a visit.
